Get Up and Go! with Heart Children

Challenge period: September 15 – December 5

This autumn, Heart Children with the support of the Adult Congenital Heart Unit in the Mater Hospital, is encouraging adults with congenital heart disease to take small actions that will lead to significant improvements in their wellbeing through the Get and Up! digital fitness campaign.

Sign up to the Get up and Go digital fitness programme and turn even the smallest everyday activity into heart healthy steps. Do what you can where you are and log your activity to reach a suggested minimum daily target of 7,000 steps. Over the course of 11 weeks – Sept 15 to Dec 5th - flex your heart fitness to virtually walk the coastline of Ireland!

Do it at home by climbing the stairs. In the workplace by making a cuppa. Log your steps when you’re shopping, cutting the grass, hoovering and even do some knee bends while washing your teeth to earn extra steps. You can even go for a walk or a run if the fancy takes you!

Why we do this

Many adults with congenital heart disease worry about their health. Many have been overly restricted in physical activity by walk-meaning parents or others. Reoperations, arrhythmias, pacemakers and past traumas are common. This campaign is aimed at giving confidence to anyone anywhere with CHD that you can improve their heart health by taking the smallest most mundane daily actions and building on them.

Challenge rules

The goal is to walk 7,000 steps a day. Your steps are tracked by the Dytt app and uploaded to the challenge. If you use activity watches or other step counters, you can integrate Fitbit, Polar, or Garmin directly with Dytt.

Full overview of your activity level

Any activity is better than no activity, which is why every step you take counts. Whether you take the stairs instead of the elevator or use a sit-stand desk, it all adds up. You can also earn steps by completing bonus missions.

See your own and your friends progress

Every step you take will bring you closer to the goal of visiting every county in Ireland! You can also compare your step average with participants in the leaderboards.

Bonus missions

In addition to activity, you can register bonus missions that give you extra steps! You get these by performing our missions that focus on small changes in everyday life that provide great health benefits, both for yourself and others.
